Who is Jesus?
"And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." - Matthew 1:21 (KJV)
Who is Jesus? Have you ever asked this question and were you able to get the right answer? This question has been asked over and over since the time of our Lord Jesus. In fact, the Lord was very interested in knowing how the believers think about him. (Matthew 16:13-16) How about you, who do you think Jesus really is?
Our key verse suggests that Jesus was not an ordinary man. He is the God who created all things including men and that it was His desire to save them from their sins. Jesus is God. In fact, He is the only God. Paul declared, "For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,) But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him." (Colossians 8:5-6)
Indeed there is only one God! That one God declares in Deuteronomy 32:39, "See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand." Old and new testaments are full of verses explaining there is but one God. If there is only one God and Jesus is God, what happens to the Father? In the same token, what happens to the Holy Spirit?
1 Timothy 3:16, "And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory." God who everybody understands to be the Father was manifest in the flesh! The angel in Joseph’s dream gave him the instruction to name the child as Jesus. The Father was manifest in the flesh and was called Jesus in fulfillment of Zechariah 14:9 which says, "And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one."
On the last chapter of Matthew which most bible scholars regard as the last commission. Jesus said, "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Take note that this instruction was specifically given to the eleven (verse 16). In Acts 2:38, this was Peter’s answer to them who asked him what shall we do? "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." This was the first ever event where one of the eleven was given the chance to fulfill Jesus’ command in Matthew 28. No one can suspect that Peter committed an error in telling the people to be baptized in Jesus name since at that very moment he was filled with the Holy Ghost! Much more all the recorded baptismal events in the bible were administered in the name of Jesus.
At one point, Jesus said, "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." Also in John 14:17 which says, "Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you." What further proof do we need to realize Jesus is the same Holy Spirit, which is not a separate God.
"Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the LORD he is God; there is none else beside him." (Deuteronomy 4:35). Samuel confessed, "Wherefore thou art great, O LORD God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears." (2 Samuel 7:22)
Who is Jesus? He is the Father in creation and the Father of everything that exists. He is Son in redemption, who bled and died for us on the cross of Calvary. He is the Holy Spirit in regeneration; the One who said where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the midths of them. He is my creator. He became my Savior; He’s the One who see me through till He calls me to be with Him throughout all eternity. And finally He is the only God sitting on the throne of heaven (Revelation 4:2), whom I will praise and worship together with the innumerable saints who trusts in Him and were washed by His blood and the heavenly host of heaven forever and ever, amen!
